It’s November, and the year is closing, meanwhile, ya girl is stuck in a time warp of R&B vibes of the 90s—a decade, for me, that was the age of the best baby makin’ music, music videos, house party jams, girl groups, and three and five part harmonies—while also the unfortunate age of crop tops and ill-fitting jeans and your local beauty shop hair-dos. Last week, the team and I took lunch at Pit Fire Pizzeria on Fairfax, which is officially in my top favorite pizzeria’s for two reasons—the pizza (which is the GOAT of foods) and the 90’s R&B playlist. They get it.
If I’m not listening to the soul classics of the 70’s, a little Kirk Whalum to John Coltrane, Sade to Emily King, or Maxwell to Tank, I’m teleporting from Boyz II Men, 112, and New Edition to TLC and SWV. Granted, I was a baby growing to a toddler when all of the best jams were conceived, but you gotta know where you come from to know where you’re going. If you’re looking for sufficient 90s vibes, you can never go wrong with a little Janet, Mariah, Monica or Brandy and if you’re feeling swaggy you can take it back with some Missy.
This week, as always, I’ll be jammin’ out to my favorite R&B sounds of love, romance, party, attitude and color—wishing I were two-stepping and swaying with young J.Lo in my choker and crop top in Janet’s That’s The Way Love Goes. Take it back with me, with this pretty cool playlist on Spotify:
