Rik Lee is an illustrator from Melbourne, Australia who now resides in Bali. When we shipped Rik his tattoos for the first time, they were delayed by a volcanic eruption. A VOLCANO. Scary cool, right?

Aside from the area Rik lives in being awesome, Rik is pretty awesome himself. He has a wide variety of illustrations and is always working on new things. For instance, he recently launched a clothing line called Rik & Reg as a collaboration between him and his wife. How sweet is that?

Get to know Rik a little more through this Q + A below. You can shop his temporary tattoo line here.

1. When was the moment in life you knew you wanted to be an artist?

I’ve always loved drawing and making art. There was a moment I realised that I may be able to make a living doing it. And making a living doing something you love is pretty great.

2. Your subject matter is mainly girls. A lot of them are heavily tattooed. Have you ever used a tattoo machine and actually tattooed someone? If not, would you like to someday?

I’ve played around with tattoo machines, yet it’s something that I’ve yet to pursue seriously. A few years ago, I was looking at beginning a tattoo apprenticeship. Around the same time my illustration career really took off. I became so busy drawing, that I put the apprenticeship idea on hold, and i’ve been busy drawing ever since. I love tattoos. I have a bunch and I also have lots of friends who tattoo, however, personally i’ve always just wanted to draw. I’m happy with where i’m at right now, but wouldn’t rule out pursuing tattooing in the future.

3. Describe yourself in 5 words or less.

Goofy, energetic, hopeful, happy

4. What or who inspires you?

So many things… Music, coffee…

5. You’re from Melbourne, but now live in Bali. Has Bali influenced your illustrative style in any way?

I think so. But it’s relatively subtle. The main influences remain the same… maybe I draw a few more palm trees now though.

6. Your artwork is now in temporary tattoo form! How does it feel to wear them?

I don’t have any room to put them on. I stuck one on my stomach which looked pretty weird.

7. You recently started a series of portraits featuring iconic artists. Does music play a big part in your life? Who are you listening to at the moment?

I love music. It has played an incredibly important role in my life. Of everything, I think music has been my greatest inspiration. Not just in art, but in almost everything I’ve done. I always listen to music while I work. I like a huge variety of stuff… from punk rock to classical film scores. The last few weeks i’ve been listening to a lot of Guided By Voices. I think few bands have released so many songs. So many really terrible songs but so many good songs too, and those good ones can be close to perfect.

8. If you met your 18 year old self, what would you say to him?

Be more confident and don’t worry so much.

9. What words would you want written on your tomb stone?

See you soon!
